Finding a financial planner: a checklist

You don't have to go through Rask to find a great financial planner. If you go it alone, here are key checks to make first.

Check their AFSL

Confirm their Australian Financial Services Licence is active before sharing personal details. Never trust someone you cannot verify in official registers.

Use the Moneysmart Financial Advisers Register and the ASIC professional registers.

Read their Financial Services Guide (FSG)

The FSG outlines the services they can provide, how they are paid, and how to make a complaint if needed. It should be easy to find on their website.

For reference, you can read the Rask Financial Services Guide.

Know their speciality

Not all advisers focus on the same outcomes. Some specialise in retirement, others in families, insurance, or investment strategy. Make sure their core work matches your goals.

Take them for a test drive

Most good advisers offer a short introductory call. Use that call to test communication style, process, and whether you feel comfortable discussing personal money decisions with them.

Know the fees before you get advice

Ask for fee estimates early, even if they are indicative. Depending on complexity, advice can range from around $3,000 for simpler needs to $15,000+ for more complex work.

Fee models differ. Some advisers charge upfront fees, some include insurance commissions, and some charge ongoing percentages.

Just ask

Ask direct questions about qualifications, process, costs, and communication. A quality adviser should answer clearly and help you feel confident before you commit.
